The scale of the suspension is extensive. Turkish Airlines confirmed that 17 flights scheduled for Friday and Saturday, January 10, were removed from the schedule. These cancellations aren’t limited to Tehran; they also affect routes to Tabriz and Mashhad, cities that have become hotspots for the ongoing civil unrest.
The disruption isn’t isolated to the national flag carrier. Several other regional airlines have followed suit:
The grounding of these flights is driven by a rapid deterioration of security on the ground. The protests, initially sparked by the collapse of the Iranian rial and the soaring cost of living, have evolved into a nationwide challenge to the government’s authority.
Behind the flight numbers are the stories of people. At Istanbul’s Terminal 1, the atmosphere is a mix of frustration and deep-seated worry. Many passengers are Iranian expatriates trying to return home to check on family members they can no longer reach due to the internet shutdown.
Turkish Airlines has stated that it is in direct contact with affected passengers to offer rebooking or refunds, but with the situation evolving hourly, few are holding their breath for a quick resolution.
The travel restriction Iran and Turkey imposed on each other is especially notable given their 500-km border and their significant cross-border economic relations. While land borders remain open for now, they are closely monitored. The UK and Germany have already issued guidance to their commercial pilots to stay away from the area due to what they describe as increased military activity.’
The message for Middle Eastern travelers is clear; the once fully open ‘Golden Age’ of cross-border travel is now facing a significant challenge. With protests now ongoing for more than 2 weeks, the opening of the Istanbul-Tehran route is now more a question of what political stability can be garnered from the Iran.
